Ananthanarayan and Paniker's Textbook of Microbiology R. Ananthanarayan and C.K. Jayaram Paniker.The present invention relates to a liquid crystal display apparatus, and more particularly, to a liquid crystal display apparatus having a color filter on an array substrate.
In general, a liquid crystal display apparatus includes a liquid crystal display panel having a pair of array substrates and a liquid crystal layer. Polarizing plates are respectively located on the outer surface of the array substrates facing each other. When an electric field is applied to the liquid crystal layer between the array substrates, the alignment of liquid crystal molecules varies, and the transmittance of light passing through the liquid crystal layer varies. The liquid crystal display panel is called a transmission type liquid crystal display panel.
The transmission type liquid crystal display panel, however, has a low contrast ratio and a narrow viewing angle. The transmission type liquid crystal display panel is, therefore, provided with a color filter on an array substrate. The color filter is located on the outer surface of the array substrate on the opposite side of the liquid crystal layer with respect to the polarizing plate.
When the color filter is disposed on the array substrate, however, the following problems arise. The color filter absorbs light, and reduces the transmittance of the light passing through the liquid crystal layer. In addition, the transmittance of the light passing through the liquid crystal layer is reduced as the thickness of the color filter increases. A light shielding layer is required on the color filter for preventing light leakage caused by light interference and reflection of light. When the light shielding layer is provided, light is absorbed by the light shielding layer, and the color purity and the transmittance are further reduced.
